A List Of Great Descriptive Essay Topics For College Students

The goal of a descriptive essay is to describe a person, place, or object. The main reason why you would be asked to write this type of essay is to learn the best ways to present your information. It is a great way to practice describing things. You will have to present information that presents how it effects all of the senses. You will want to describe how it looks and how it smells. You may not be able to express how something tastes, especially if you are describing a place.

You want to invoke as many of the senses as possible. You want to explain the person, place, or object so well that your reader feels like they understand it. They should feel like they have been there themselves or possess the object that you are writing about.

When you are choosing a topic to write about, you have to make sure that you focus on choosing a topic that you know well enough to explain in great detail. You want to paint a picture with your words so that your reader can picture it without every seeing it. Here are some exciting topics to consider writing about.

  • Famous people: Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Buddha, Mother Teresa, Marilyn Monroe, Martin Luther King, and John Kennedy
  • Interesting civilizations: Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, Greece, Sumerians, Mayans, Incas, and the Persian Empire
  • Interesting places: Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, Colosseum, Christ the Redeemer, Machu Picchu, Bali, Amazon, Great Barrier Reef, Forbidden City, Bora Bora, Jerusalem Old City, Acropolis in Parthenon, Pyramids of Giza, Easter Island, Galapagos Islands, Stonehenge
  • Animals: Caiman, Chameleon, Bearded Dragon, Tortoise, Frilled Lizard, Arctic Fox, Blue Jay, Arctic Wolf, Banded Palm Civet, Bandicoot, Chamois, Chinchilla, Collared Peccary
  • Object: Television, Motor Vehicle, Market place, playground, park, school

The key is that you can write about just about anything that you can think about. Obviously, there are some things that will be harder to write a paper on than others. If you are trying to write a paper about a “pencil”, you may have a hard time. Choose something with a little more substance, so that it isn’t so hard to write about. Think of something that has a distinct smell, texture, look, and sound. That way you can talk about almost all of the senses and be able to complete this assignment.
